I own a 1971 BMW 2002 with 128,000 miles on the clock. The synchros in the transmission are wearing and there is excessive play in the rear end. BMW dealers in the area want what I consider to be an exorbitant amount of money to repair these items. Is there someplace that has an exchange program for rebuilt transmissions? My dealer states that the rear end is not adjustable and cannot be inexpensively repaired. Your opinion?

Well, your car is worth close to $3000, so $400 for a transmission rebuild doesn’t sound so bad. A good used one should be able to be picked up for around $250. The gears in the differential can be adjusted, assuming they are not pitted or galled on the meeting surfaces, but it takes a professional to do it. If the rest of the car is in good shape, the investment makes sense. Tech Ed.
