Motor Mount Warning

Owners of 1968 through 1970 1602/2002 models are warned to check the right motor mount, the one on the exhaust side. These mounts have been giving up the ghost with increasing frequency lately and if the crack that develops inside of the V” goes all the way and if the rubber in the mount is deteriorated or cracked, the engine can drop enough that it will interfere with your steering. The angle of the V should be about 45°, viewed from under the car at the front. Possible symptoms of this malady are popping out of gear, the exhaust banging the underside of the car when starting, general shifting looseness, excessive side to side movement of the shift lever (also a sign of a loose transmission mount). The part costs $10 and replacement of it costs $15.
