On pre-1972 BMW 2002, a potential hazard exists.
The right hand (passenger) side motor mount bracket which affixes the mount to the engine is a V-shaped single piece of steel. This is prone to collapse around 60-70,000 miles. The collapse then permits your transmission to drop down.
When this piece breaks in two, you might lose the steering completely. Owners of four cylinder BMWs with serial numbers lower than 2570000, or earlier than 1972 production, would do well to ascertain that this bracket is not collapsed or cracked.
If it is, replace it immediately with the new updated BMW bracket which is reinforced and provides a stop for the motor mount should it ever break.
