When changing oil and filter on your BMW 2002, it’s always a good idea to add only the specified even number of quarts, then check your oil level after starting the car and allowing sufficient time for an accurate reading.
It may be too much to add the additional fraction of a quart for the filter since some old oil may be trapped in galleries and the pan if you’re on even a slight incline. Should you ever overfill, it’s easy to extract about 1/4 of a quart. Simply remove the oil filter, drain, and replace.
