If the round engine mount on the left side of the engine has deteriorated, as evidenced by the air cleaner housing hitting the hood when the engine is turned over or as the car goes over a bump, it will have to be replaced.
Use the new type square mount — it is no stronger but if this one breaks, it won’t allow the engine to drop onto the steering, taking away control. Better yet, use the Bavaria mount — it is stronger than the improved BMW 2002 mount and costs less, about $8.
Replacement involves only supporting the engine from underneath while you unbolt the old one and bolt in the new one.
