Faulty BMW Fuel Gauge
My 1969 2002 has a gas gauge that almost always reads full. Both the sending unit and the gauge have been replaced and the problem persists. Any solutions?
BMW 2002 Tachometer Bounce
A symptom which comes up once in a while for no apparent reason is the tachometer bouncing up by about 2000 rpm, going back to zero, and then resuming normal operation. Another symptom is the inability to get the same dwell reading on consecutive attempts. Yet another symptom is worsening gas mileage immediately after a [...]
Tip to Fix Fluttering Speedometer Needle
Is your BMW 2002 speedometer fluttering, or is your speedometer cable growling at you?
The fix is easy. Get a tube of speedo cable lubricant (under $1 at auto parts stores), disconnect the cable at the instrument panel end, and pour in some of the lubricant as much as you can without spilling it.

BMW 2002 Temperature and Fuel Gauge Repair
When I discovered my 1970 BMW 2002’s temperature gauge pegged in the red with no real sign that the engine actually was that hot, it turned out to be an electrical malfunction. The article by Louis D’Amario on page 12 of the February 1977 Roundel paid for most of my first Year’s membership in the [...]
How To Fix an Erratic Temperature Gauge in 1973 BMW 2002
For over two years, I had been trying to find the cause of erratic behavior in the temperature gauge on my 1973 BMW 2002. The needle jumped about randomly and would often get stuck in the red area. This behavior suggested an electrical problem as opposed to a mechanical one.
Here is my fix;
First, remove instrument [...]
BMW 2002 Rear Defogger Switch
Two welcome additions to my 1975 BMW 2002 were a 530i rear defogger switch which has the convenience of a small green light providing those of us who are somewhat absentminded with notice of an operating rear defogger, and a VDO Top Cockpit quartz clock which I placed on my dashboard shelf above the glovebox. [...]
BMW 2002 Clock Repair Tips
When I bought a used 1970 BMW 2002, the clock did not operate. Here’s how I was able to repair the clock.
Removing the panel to the left of the glovebox, I reached up behind the clock and unscrewed the knobs holding it in place. Note where the wires go and remove them. The clock is [...]
Installing Additional Instrument Gauge in BMW 2002
If you hate “pasting” garbage all over your BMW 2002’s cosmetically clean dash, and have decided that you need at least one more gauge, such as oil pressure, ammeter, etc., consider that nice clock housing. The VDO “Set Cockpit” style gauges will fit these holes nicely, if you care to take the time to do [...]
Erratic Fuel Gauge on 1975 BMW 2002
After reading the article, “Erratic Temperature Gauge” (February 1977 Roundel) I tried the solution for my fuel gauge but it didn’t seem to have any effect.
Still considering it a wiring problem of some sort I hooked the fuel and temperature gauges up separately from the speedometer and tachometer. I proceeded to then test the wires [...]
Speedometer Fix for 1976 BMW 2002
On page 26 of the September Roundel, it was mentioned that 1976 BMW 2002 have speedometers that are about 7% optimistic. Jim Ryan, Technical Services Manager of BMW of North America, informs us that they have a fix — a corrected speedometer face.
This item is available free through BMW dealers. The corrected facing fits right [...]
